Calculate work
W = F × sWork, energy and power
Calculate work, force, or displacement when a constant force acts in the direction of motion.
Formula
W = F × s For a constant force parallel to displacement, mechanical work equals force multiplied by displacement.
| Symbol | Quantity | SI | Supported units |
|---|---|---|---|
| W | mechanical workEnergy transferred by the force over the stated displacement. | J | J, kJ |
| F | forceConstant force component acting along the displacement. | N | N, kN |
| s | displacementDistance travelled in the direction of the force. | m | m, cm, km |

s = W / FA constant 250 N force moves a load 12 m in the same direction. Calculate the work.
Result: 3000 J = 3 kJ
A machine performs 18 kJ of work with a constant force of 600 N. Find the displacement.
Result: 30 m
