About this tool
Converts between decimal units (kB, MB, GB, based on 1000) and binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB, based on 1024), plus bits and bytes. Keeping them apart is the whole point: it is why a drive sold as 1 TB shows up in Windows as about 931 GB.

Good to know
Questions people actually ask
- Why does my 1 TB drive show as 931 GB?
- Because two different units share a name. The manufacturer sells 1 TB = 1 000 000 000 000 bytes; Windows divides by 1024 three times and labels the result "GB" when it is really 931 GiB. Nothing is missing - it is the same bytes counted in a different unit.
- Is a megabyte 8 megabits?
- Yes, and the distinction matters for internet speeds: a 100 Mb/s connection downloads at about 12.5 MB/s. Note the capital B for bytes and lowercase b for bits.
